League of Legends Just Became a Card Game — And Riftbound Might Be Your New Obsession

League of Legends Just Became a Card Game — And Riftbound Might Be Your New Obsession

Riftbound Booster box

League of Legends just got real — like, physically real. It started with one question: what if you could feel the tension of Summoner’s Rift… in your hands?

That moment when Jinx charges into battle, when Lux blinds the battlefield with a spell, when Lee Sin moves faster than the eye — it’s now possible without a keyboard or mouse. Welcome to Riftbound, Riot Games’ brand-new trading card game, where your favorite champions come to life in a fast-paced, strategic tabletop format.

Whether you're a League of Legends veteran or a newcomer looking for a fresh card game, Riftbound has already turned heads — and booster boxes.

From Screen to Table: What Is Riftbound?

Riftbound is Riot’s first physical trading card game, co-developed with UVS Games. It’s built on the League of Legends universe, but plays nothing like Legends of Runeterra.

Here, every player leads a Champion Legend — a powerful hero that anchors your deck. You’ll build your army, cast spells using mystical runes, and outmaneuver your opponents across three shifting battlefields. It’s not just about damage — it’s about control.

  • 300+ cards in the launch Origins set
  • Territory-based combat across 3 battle zones
  • Multiplayer formats: 1v1, 2v2 team games, and 4-player free-for-all
  • Unique gameplay: players draw runes instead of mana and move their units to gain control points

First to 8 points (or 11 in team matches) wins. But how you get there? That’s up to your strategy.

“I Opened One Pack And I Was Hooked”

That’s the kind of reaction early players have shared during Riftbound’s Preview Season on Reddit and Facebook. With stunning original art and strategic gameplay, even demo decks have made an impact.

Here’s what players are pulling:

  • Epic cards — ~6 per booster box
  • Alt-arts & overnumbered cards — rare showcase versions
  • Three foils in every pack — not one, not two, but three

There’s real treasure inside these packs. And the good news? You don’t need a full playset of four cards — two of each is enough for competitive play.

How It Plays — In Simple Terms

Imagine a battlefield with three lanes — like Summoner’s Rift, but physical.

Each turn, you:

  1. Draw two runes to use as energy
  2. Play cards: deploy units, cast spells, equip gear
  3. Move your units across battlefields
  4. Score points by controlling unoccupied lanes or defeating enemy units

"It feels like chess and Magic had a baby."

It’s a comparison that’s been echoed across Reddit and early preview discussions during the game’s demo phase, where testers praised its mix of tactical movement, resource strategy, and champion-driven gameplay.

And with multiple formats (1v1, 2v2, FFA), the game is just as fun at home with friends as it is at your local card shop tournament.
